Inquiry report about children and young people: The NSW Parliamentary Committee on Children and Young People recently released a Kids' Version of its inquiry report about children and young people 9-14 years. As the full inquiry report is about 350 pages long, the aim of the Kids' Version is to make the findings of the report more accessible to children and young people, particularly those aged 9-14. Feedback was sought from children and young people in this age group  about the 4 page Kids' Version while it was being developed. In newspapers, magazines, radio interviews and television stunts we'll speak with one voice: our generation can be the one to end extreme poverty. After 5 days each road trip will arrive in Canberra - for a national summit of young leaders. Over the course of two days these young people will hear from federal politicians, community leaders and community organising experts. Give up alcohol for a whole month? We double dare you! FebFast is a national health and charity campaign that dares Australians to banish the booze during February, the shortest month of the year. After the indulgent festive season, FebFast gives your liver a break while raising money for organisations that help young people with serious alcohol and drug problems. Giving up grog for 28 days can seem daunting to some, so in 2010 FebFast “double dares” you – sign up for FebFast with a friend, partner or family member and do it together. Funds raised from FebFast go to The Australian Drug Foundation, Youth Substance Abuse Service (VIC), Ted Noffs Foundation (NSW and ACT), Mater Hospital Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Service (QLD) and several community organisations. During February, FebFasters will receive a range of discounts and goodies including free Step into Life group fitness sessions, discounts at GNC LiveWell stores and Endota Spa, and concession price tickets at Moonlight Cinema. Kick-start your fundraising by paying the $25 ($10 concession) registration fee, then create your own page where your friends and family can donate online. All donations over $2 are tax deductable. While FebFast is a challenge, we don’t want to spoil the party – participants can purchase a date stamped ‘Time Out Certificate’ to celebrate a special occasion with alcohol. Take up the challenge and sign up today at www.febfast.com.au.

Breakthrough - Emerging Indigenous Musicians Recording Initiative: Breakthrough provides an opportunity to expose the talent and creativity of Indigenous musicians to national and international audiences. Breakthrough aims to take Indigenous contemporary musicians to a wider listening audience by providing up to $25,000 to three emerging Indigenous musicians to produce a high quality CD suitable for commercial release. This funding can assist with recording costs, production and engineering fees, mixing, mastering, design work and printing, as well as associated publicity and media costs. Music provides an important vehicle for emerging Indigenous musicians to express their creativity and culture and Breakthrough offers them an opportunity to professionally record their music. It is evident that there is a lot of talent present in the Indigenous contemporary music sector and we encourage all emerging Indigenous musicians to apply for the Breakthrough funding and bring their musical talents to the attention of the mainstream music industry. Applications for Breakthrough funding close at 5pm on Friday 19 February 2010. For more information go to www.arts.gov.au/indigenous/breakthrough or ring 02 6275 9615.

If you are 16-24 years of age, visit www.matespeak.com.au to complete the survey and tell them what you think!

Drugs, suicide & body image: the issues of most concern to young Australians - Mission Australia: Australia's largest annual survey of young people has found that drugs, suicide and body image are the biggest worries for 11-24 year olds with one-in-four regarding each as major concerns. The survey has also uncovered many 11-14 year olds feel unequipped to deal with the issue of drugs. The national survey, conducted by Mission Australia, tested the views of close to 48,000 young people - its biggest group since the survey began in 2002 - between the ages of 11-24 (97.9 per cent aged 11-19). When asked to rank their concern about 15 issues drugs was ranked most frequently in the top three by 26.8 per cent of respondents, closely followed by suicide at 26.3 per cent and body image at 25.5 per cent. However, the concerns of respondents in this year's poll were very evenly spread with eight of the 15 isssues surveyed considered a priority to at least one in five respondents. The survey also detected decreases across all activities involving young people - particularly arts/cultural activities, and to a lesser extent, spectator sports and youth groups - which the charity suggests is an impact of the global financial crisis on Australian families over the past 12 months. For more information and to download survey report visit the website at www.missionaustralia.com.au.

Calling all young people in NSW: Are you looking to get involved in making decisions that affect young people? Or do you know someone that does? The NSW Commission for Children and Young People is offering 12 young people an awesome opportunity to be on its 2010 Young People’s Reference Group (YPRG). The YPRG is a great way to get involved, have a say, be heard, and have fun! It’s made up of 12 young people aged between 12 and 17 years. They come from all over NSW and have all different kinds of backgrounds and experiences. They help the Commission stay in touch with what’s going on in the world of young people. Perspective Volume 4 Online Launch! The United Nations Youth Association of Australia (UNYA) is proud to launch Perspective, a new journal of youth writing on international affairs and domestic policy. Perspective aims to provide an outlet for the views of young people who have a unique perspective and an intrinsically fresh approach to a range of global issues. Perspective volunteer managers, editors and designers have high hopes: wanting it to become the cornerstone of youth opinion and intellect. The new issue is jam-packed with some incredible articles that were handpicked from approximately 80 submissions. Each article offers the reader a highly intelligent and inventive approach to some of the most complex problems our world faces today – such as climate change, human rights, war crimes, child prostitution and gender issues. The Australian Government has asked the Productivity Commission to conduct an inquiry into gambling. The Commission is keen to make sure the views and experience of young people are included. For Your Information

Funding for Tamworth Youthie: State MP, Peter Draper, today welcomed a $2,000 grant to assist with the cost of promoting and operating the 2009/10 Christmas Holiday Program at the The Youthie, Tamworth’s drop in centre. Mr Draper joined Tamworth Regional Council’s Youth Services Co-ordinator, Stephen Blanch, at The Youthie to announce plans for this year’s Christmas Holiday Program. “I congratulate Stephen on his initiative in developing a program that attracted funding support from the Minister for Juvenile Justice and Minister for Youth, Graham West,” Mr Draper said. “In past years The Youthie has run some fantastic programs over Christmas vacation periods, that have offered kids ‘at a loose end’, a variety of events to keep them engaged.” “This funding will provide diversionary activities and specialist workshops, as part of The Youthie’s ongoing program to engage at-risk youth in the region,” he said. Mr Draper said responses to his recent crime, law and order survey had indicated the importance of programs that kept bored kids occupied. “The Youthie’s programs in the past have provided many young people with interesting and fulfilling activities, and I am pleased this funding will allow that to continue,” he said. “Not only does The Youthie provide these opportunities, but it also provides a base for kids to get together and interact with their peers,” he continued. “This funding is wonderful news, and I encourage the district’s youth to check out what The Youthie has to offer them,” Mr Draper concluded.
Reach Out Pro: (www.reachout.pro.com.au) is a website launched earlier this year that provides information for health care professionals working with young people aged 14-25 on a range of technologies and online resources that can be used to enhance the effectiveness of psychosocial support and mental health care provided to young people based on the recognition of the significant role technology plays in the lives of young people.

Lawstuff - legal information & advice for children & young people: The National Children's and Youth Law Centre (NCYLC) provides free information and advice services directly to children and young people. Children and young people can go online to www.lawstuff.org.au to access 'Lawstuff'. Lawstuff is NCYLC's website which provides information on various legal issues pertinent to its target client. Established in 1997, Lawstuff was the first legal website of its kind for children and young people, providing detailed information - by State and Territory - on a range of issues of particular relevance to young Australians. The information is presented in a way that is appropriate and relevant to young people, using cartoons and short stories to encourage users to ask questions and make informed decisions. Proving its success, the website has had well over 5 million hits. Lawstuff also provides access to 'Lawmail', an email advice service that enables children and young people to ask NCYLC staff and volunteers questions about legal issues specific to them. This service has the benefit of being internet-based and provides a method of communication that children and young people appear to be more comfortable with, as opposed to the more conventional form of a 'drop in' style community centre. The service is confidential and can be accessed anonymously - all that is required is an email address so that NCYLC can email a response.

Landcare Week 2009: It’s just two weeks to go until Landcare Week 2009 (September 7-13) and this year it marks the 20 year milestone of Landcare Australia. Under the theme “Join the Landcare Journey”, the awareness week celebrates the huge contribution landcare volunteers have made to environmental conservation in their local communities, as well as encouraging others to put up their hands and get involved. New Landcare Australia research shows that many people are willing to get involved, but few actually do; mainly because they aren’t sure how. During Landcare Week, local landcare groups throughout Australia will be holding community activities and would value volunteers who want to get involved. To get involved find out if there's a landcare activity planned in your area (check out the events calendar at www.landcareweek.com or ask your local council), download the New Group Starter Kit - manual for new landcare groups, which will be launched in Landcare Week and made available to download from Landcareweek.com, become a fan of Landcare Australia’s Facebook Page to connect with other groups and potential volunteers and subscribe to the LandLink e-newsletter to stay informed about all Landcare Australia’s activities in the future.

It also discusses the pitfalls to avoid, and where to get help if your privacy has been affected. Download private i from www.privacy.gov.au/topics/youth/index.html now. Highsnlows: www.highsnlows.com.au is a new campaign and website about cannabis and mental health. It is a collaboration between the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF, www.adf.org.au), Orygen Youth Health (www.oyh.org.au) and the Department of Human Services (DHS) Victoria (www.dhs.vic.gov.au). The campaign will roll out over the next five months and will feature a series of animated short films following four young people's experiences with cannabis. These films encourage the audience to think about how their mental health and wellbeing may be affected by cannabis use. The first of these animated short films can be found on the highsnlows website, along with other information for young people about how cannabis use can affect their mental health and where they can find help. The website includes an anonymous and professional Q&A service that provides clear, unbiased, non-judgmental answers to any questions they may have about cannabis and mental health, a safe space for visitors to share their stories and experiences, information about cannabis and mental health, and a searchable database of Australian youth-friendly health services and organisations.

Australian Youth Forum: When you start your first job, your rights and responsibilities in the workplace can be a bit of a mystery. The Government is developing a Young Workers’ Toolkit, so they want to hear your experiences – good and bad – at work. Keen to share? - Visit the website at www.youth.gov.au/ayf.

Young people & the criminal justice system: New insights & promising responses - Mission Australia. Programs designed to divert young people from offending behaviour and entering juvenile detention can not only be more effective than putting a young person in custody but up to 50 times cheaper to run according to the community service organisation Mission Australia. Mission Australia says diversionary programs designed to keep young people from re-offending can cut rates by more than half and reduce serious offences by close to two-thirds. Mission Australia has called on state and territory governments to set targets to reduce the numbers of juveniles in detention and expand the number of successful diversionary programs. Mission Australia's spokesperson, Anne Hampshire, said an upturn in the number of young people in custody, high levels of recidivism and the significant cost of locking young people up highlighted the need for alternatives to addressing offending behaviour. The full report can be viewed at www.missionaustralia.com.au.

Mobile Phones: More than 1,500 children and young people in Years 6 and 9 across NSW have told the NSW Commission for Children and Young People and the University of Sydney, and the University of Technology about mobile phones in their lives. They found that mobiles aren’t simply a way for worried parents to control their kids, or for kids to control their parents. Instead, mobiles are a good thing, part of a communication revolution, and help both parents and kids meet the changing circumstances of modern life. Most importantly mobiles support kids by helping them to be independent. Mobiles also help kids organise their daily lives, support their relationships including family relationships when parents are separated, provide entertainment, and help them feel safer. They also found that mobiles free up parents to do the things that are increasingly part of family life particularly when both parents work, like arranging drop offs and pick ups and checking their children are home safely. There are examples of mobiles being used in negative ways, but mainly these were about annoyances like pranking and practical jokes. While sometimes kids used mobiles for deception, the researchers found little evidence of mobiles being used to bully others. There are however, some warning signs with technologies such as Bluetooth, and with the internet becoming more commonly available on mobiles. The full report is at www.kids.nsw.gov.au/kids/resources/publications/askchildren.cfm

Have your say as part of an exciting new project: Let us know what’s important for young people who are carers or who live with a disability, learning difficulty or chronic illness. A group of 20 organisations and individuals, led by the Inspire Foundation, have established a collaboration to look at how information communication technology can be used to provide support to young people from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. The focus for the project is young people aged between 12 and 25 who care for or live with a family member or friend with a disability, chronic or mental illness or drug or alcohol problem, have a learning difficulty, live with a disability or experience a chronic or serious illness. From 1st March 2009 to 30th June 2009 we will be hosting an online forum via ActNow (www.actnow.com.au) to find out from young people what their needs are, what role technology might play in meeting these needs and what ideas they have for new technology based research or projects that might help them lead happier lives. Go to www.actnow.com.au and sign up as a member, email michelle@inspire.org.au and let her know what your username is, Michelle will give you access to the online forum and email you back when this has been granted and then go to www.actnow.com.au and join the discussion under ‘ARACY Collaboration’.

Organisations from across the region can apply to Arts North West for funding to support workshop programs for young people in a range of arts and cultural activities leading up to and during the Artstart 2009 NSW Youth Arts and Skills Festival in September. Artstart is a great opportunity for young people in the region to develop skills applicable in a wide range of occupations including the arts industry.  Projects foster skills in literacy, numeracy, teamwork and problem solving - all essential to young people’s personal development. EARTH HOUR 2009 8:30 – 9:30pm Saturday 28 March: Bold, simple and accessible, Earth Hour 2009 has one major aim: to show governments, individuals and businesses that it is possible to take action on global warming. The world can no longer wait and the first step is as easy as turning off a light. Created in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour began as a city’s way of showing its support for taking action on climate change. In 2008, more than 50 million people in 370 cities in 35 countries turned off their lights for Earth Hour. In what will be the world’s largest community event, Earth Hour 2009 is set to involve one billion people around the globe, in more than 1,000 cities, turning off lights as a message to world leaders prior to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The message is clear - that we need a commitment to actions that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the benefit of the planet. It is extremely important for young people to get involved in Earth Hour. Young people are the ones who will have to deal with climate change in the future as a result of the decisions made today. REGISTER NOW at www.earthhour.org. And don't forget to turn out your lights not only for Earth Hour but continue your energy saving measures beyond the 28th March!
